bye-bye blackbird

Billie Frenchette is known for her personal relationship with John Dillinger in the early 1930s. John Dillinger is a bank robber who became a celebrity of crime since he and his gang dominated the attention of the American press and its readers during what is sometimes referred to as the Public Enemy. He was considered to be a dangerous criminal who was involved in the deaths of several police officers, robbed at least two dozen banks and four police stations, escaped from jail twice and was idolized by his crime action.

Billie Frenchette met John Dillinger at the dance hall in november 1933. Frechette gave Dillinger minimal assistance. She made purchases for him, such as clothing and cars, but for the most part, she performed the role of a housewife. They remained together until Frechette was arrested by Department of Investigation Special Agents on April 9, 1934. When she was in jail, Dilinger shot to death by the Bureau of Investigation. One bullet entered through the back of his neck and exited from his face, killing him. before he passed, he whispered "tell Billie for me, bye-bye Blackbird".

you can see a whole story in a movie directed by Michael Mann, "Public Enemies", or more details in a book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI" by Bryan Burrough.
